Northeast Arc has named Areeba Khan its Director of Assistive Technology.
Assistive technology is any device or service that supports individuals with disabilities, enabling them to participate more independently in life. This technology can range from simple adaptations of existing products to highly sophisticated and specialized devices.
Khan, a resident of Sharon, will oversee Northeast Arc’s assistive technology program, which provides consultation and training to individuals looking to use technology. Northeast Arc also operates an assistive technology lending library at the Center for Linking Lives at Liberty Tree Mall where members of the public can test out and borrow pieces of technology.
“Assistive technology is critical because it helps individuals with disabilities learn, live independently, feel included in their communities, and succeed at home, school, and in the workplace,” said Jo Ann Simons, president and CEO, Northeast Arc. “Areeba brings a wealth of expertise to her new role that will help us reach more people with this potentially life-changing technology.”
Prior to joining Northeast Arc, Khan worked as an assistive technology specialist for Seven Hills Foundation, and interned as a rehabilitation technology specialist for National Seating and Mobility. Khan has a bachelor’s in Biomedical Engineering from UMass Amherst, and a masters in Rehabilitation Technology from University of Pittsburgh.
“I hope that the Northeast Arc assistive technology program can become a trailblazer in the field,” said Khan. “My goals include expanding coverage of assistive technology service delivery across Massachusetts, establishing a makerspace for assistive technology development, and increasing usability and access of the assistive technology lending library.”
Khan is originally from Pakistan. Outside of work, Areeba’s interests lie in International Development. She recently conducted a fundraiser to support the production of wooden wheelchairs, in Pakistan. Khan’s dream is to increase access to assistive technology all over the world.
