The Brick is a $59 NFC-enabled device designed to help users take control of their screen time.  When paired with its companion app, users first choose which smart phone apps to block and which to keep accessible, then activate Brick Mode by tapping their phone on the device. The chosen apps will remain unavailable until the phone Brick Mode is deactivated by tapping their phone on the device a second time. While Brick Mode is activated, the Brick device can be placed away from the user, causing a physical separation that many users find more effective than software-only tools like built-in Screen Time limits.

The Brick has several ways it can support individuals to limit their phone use, while still providing access to important communication functions. For example, individuals employed or attending day services can set up custom focus modes that block non-work apps, helping individuals stay engaged in job tasks or skill-building activities without impulsively switching to social media, streaming apps, or games.  The Brick can also support emotional regulation by reducing doomscrolling and limiting exposure to overwhelming content, particularly at important moments like the beginning and end of the day. Overall, the Brick is an easy-to-use tool to support individuals trying to break negative technology habits.
