Transition, School Supports, and Respite
The process of transitioning from high school to college, vocational training, employment and/or independent living is a big shift and can feel overwhelming. For individuals with disabilities, it can be that much more challenging. Northeast Arc has extensive experience in providing social, recreational, advocacy and vocational support to individuals age 14 to 26 and we are a resource to local schools and adult service providers, offering consultation, staff training and school-based services.
A Weekend to Remember: Respite Program
One way Northeast Arc supports families during transition is through its A Weekend to Remember: Respite Program. This innovative program allows young adults, aged 16 through 30, to enjoy a respite experience while simultaneously gaining valuable skills needed for independent living. Attendees will participate in a shared living experience with their peers while being overseen by staff. There will be an average of five retreats per year, each with their own unique twist. Each retreat will be hosted at a local accommodation within the Northeast region. Engaging community activities will be incorporated, from trolley tours to boat rides, museum tours, and festivals, the retreat will make the most of what our communities have to offer! Young adults will leave the weekend feeling rejuvenated, inspired, and empowered.

The Down Syndrome Transition Handbook
In 2010, Northeast Arc President and CEO Jo Ann Simons published The Down Syndrome Transition Handbook: Charting Your Child’s Course to Adulthood.
The Down Syndrome Transition Handbook helps parents prepare their child for independent adult life. It’s full of practical tips and step-by-step instructions to help families envision their child’s future, develop a transition plan, and implement it. There’s also a wealth of information about adults in their twenties or thirties living at home who are still struggling with finding a job, locating housing, or establishing a meaningful life in their community, and who could achieve more independence with the right guidance and supports.
The book is the culmination of the Jo Ann Simon’s professional and personal experiences guiding hundreds of families through the transition process, and parenting her own son with Down syndrome, now an adult living independently. Its conversational style reassures parents overwhelmed by a complex process and its frank advice offers a reality check for parents whose child will soon venture into the adult world, or whose adult child has yet to leave the nest.
Northeast Arc is pleased to be able to offer this book for free.
