Individuals with Down syndrome have a very high rate of developing early on-set Alzheimer’s disease. The Northeast Arc recognizes this correlation and has worked to modify supports and diagnostic testing for all individuals in hopes of slowing the disease process and preserving daily living skills.
Staff work collaboratively with geriatric specialists to monitor an individual’s progress through functional assessments. Current research on medication supports, environmental supports and behavioral supports provides the foundation for advancing our service models to enhance participants’ lives.
Staff are specifically trained on how to support a person as they journey through this disease process. Utilization of community supports such as home health care agencies and hospice services permit the development of tailored services for each person. Staff are also specifically trained on how to support participants with end-of-life care.
