Personal Assistance

The Medicaid-funded Personal Care Attendant (PCA) program offers home-based support to individuals requiring physical help with activities of daily living due to their disability. A Northeast Arc Personal Assistance skills trainer, along with a nurse and occupational therapist, assesses the personal care needs of the individual, and prepares a PCA application to submit to Medicaid. Once approval is received, the skills trainer teaches the individual how to successfully hire, train, supervise, and pay his or her own personal care attendants.

Individuals must be:

  • Medicaid-eligible
  • Must require physical assistance (due to a disability) in order to complete some aspects of personal care
  • Must receive prior approval for PCA services from the Division of Medical Assistance

Assistance may be may be approved, depending on the individual need, to complete the following tasks:

  • Bathing
  • Dressing
  • Toileting
  • Grooming
  • Eating
  • Mobility
  • Medication Administration

  • And in some cases: light housekeeping, laundry, meal preparation, and transportation to Medical Appointments.
